Just in time Mr HG has bought my lottery ticket. So at 8.30 tonight I shall win one hundred million euros. Yes, one hundred million. If I don't it will be because I've never had a lottery ticket before and it probably takes practice. But things are looking good, and optimism is at optimal levels.
Update
It takes practice, as I feared. I didn't get any numbers at all, but will do better next time there is a prize as big as this offered.

Wow, you must be really rich by now!
Something seems to have gone wrong, L. I expect others were cheating by praying. Now that is really mean behaviour. Luck obviously belongs in the same universe of belief as chance, and arbitrariness, and God. Some of us are being discriminated against for lack of faith in particular beliefs. Quite clearly I have faith, and that should be enough. But No, it doesn't count unless I'm joined up to all the lottery numbers stuff and the praying to various holy names stuff, never mind the laws of chance stuff (which I would believe in if only I could understand it.)
So, because of discrimination, I am still poor. I'm not going to try again next week either. The weekly expenditure over, say, the last 20 years at compound interest (Mr HG doing bravura calculations on various village examples in an attempt to temper my expectations and amuse himself while the dinner was cooking) is astounding.
F'rinstance, the wife of the tractor driver has been betting 20 euros a week (or the equivalent in liras) all their married life, WITH THE SAME NUMBERS. While at some level I can see that it doesn't matter that they are the same numbers, she is convinced her faith will be rewarded, and I, equally wrongly, have drawn my own conclusions about her numbers (which she keeps deadly secret). I am going to have to straighten my ideas out about all this kind of thing.
(I can't remember how much they had spent but it was thousands of euros).
