Earth Hour came and went without a flicker of conformity from the Comune or the Monculisti. The floodlights aimed at the church and next door buildings (ie us) flooded on, into rooms that never know darkness now unless the scuri are fastened tightly inside and the shutters closed without. Not a hope of walking through the place by moonlight, or looking from darkness out at the night sky, at least in the front of the building.
Looking from the back, the whole of the valley was lit up with towns and villages glowing on their hilltops and hillsides, roads lined orange; night was made day, as usual, from all the street lights in the village itself, just in case a danger might hide behind the newsagents, or lurk near the fountain.
People resent the dark; it's a loss of control, a return to a not very distant past when being in the dark meant poverty and over-simplicity of life-style. Or external threat.
The greenies are on a loser trying to bring the dark back.

we gave up the good fight after the inaugural "turn off the lights" night. Claudia decided to do the right thing by lighting candles and distributing them all around the house, one of the candles was placed on the mantel underneath a overhanging decorative piece of wood, the obvious happened, just caught it in time, after that Phil said someone else could save the planet while we saved our house.x AA
And saved the neighbourhood too, if the pictures of fires on the telly are anything to go by when they occur, AA.
I find the greenies hard to bear. It's not that I don't want efforts to avoid light pollution, or less forest destruction, or according the claims of other species to living room on the planet; it's the holier than thou tone, the cynical attempts to mulct more taxes under 'green' labels, and the utter dishonesty of pretending that we can all live an eco-balanced life-style. Only the well-to-do can even contemplate doing that; most people are simply too poor and there are too many of us to achieve the false goals greenies justify their agendas with. But they keep on upsetting others, particularly the smalls, pretending that if each of us only did our bit and made ourselves just a little more caring and careful (and uncomfortable) grrrrr.
We eco rebuilt partly because why not as it was a ruin anyway, partly because the grants were there, and partly because we had an environment to do it in. I suspect no-one is wilfully destructive, but we could all do without being nagged and bugged and lied to.
The apple tree is in full bloom, after a respectable pruning to give it a good shape, and has settled in to its standing ground well, so despite a viciously cold winter, it's set for ever.
Cannot wait to visit again,is that the tree the public defender planted? Just sent message to soon to be father, hoping to hear some early news. Very exciting. Was wondering if you were traveling overland instead of chancing volcanic ash? Are you there already? Looking forward to photos. x AA
